Is Kyle Walker in need of a rest or is his dip in form something more?

As Manchester City’s winless run in the Premier League has grown to four games the performance of Kyle Walker has also dropped. The England international has been ever present for City and England this season. He has barely missed any games for either but is his recent form due to fatigue or is it something more?

Walker signed a contract extension with the European champions in the summer and has been captain of the club in Kevin De Bruyne’s absence. He started the season in sparkling form as he looked inspired by his new deal and leadership role.

The first sign of Walker’s form dipping came against Chelsea. In the 4-all draw at Stamford Bridge, he was given a torrid time by Raheem Sterling. It was a startling sight to see Walker beaten so resoundingly during a game. He returned to form against Liverpool but his performances against Tottenham and Aston Villa haven’t reached the lofty standards of the City captain.

It does raise the question is it fatigue or is it something more? The full-back has played 21 games already for Manchester City this season. Walker may need a rest given the amount of football he’s played so far this season to recharge and refresh.

At age 33 the City captain is also closer to the end of his career than the beginning. Father Time eventually catches up with every player. Walker will naturally begin to slow down given his age and the amount of games he’s played during his career, the hope is it hasn’t already begun.

The City captain is an integral part of his side. His pace and experience are crucial to Pep Guardiola’s side. Perhaps some rest is needed for Kyle Walker to return to the form he began the season in.
