Pep Guardiola says the better team won as City’s issues grow in defeat to Aston Villa

Pep Guardiola says the better team won during their 1-nil defeat to Aston Villa. Manchester City were beaten all over the pitch by a determined Villa side. The scoreline didn’t reflect their dominance as Unai Emery’s side could’ve won by more if it wasn’t for some inspired goalkeeping by Ederson.

The loss was one of the worst defeats for Manchester City in recent memory. They couldn’t get a foothold in the game as their makeshift midfield was harassed and pressured by a hungry Aston Villa outfit. Another issue that arose was the lack of chances the treble winners created. Erling Haaland had two chances saved by Emiliano Martinez in the 11th minute and that was the only chances created by the European champions.

Speaking following the defeat Pep Guardiola praised Aston Villa. He told the media: “The better team won. Aston Villa was better than us. They are well organised, fast and (have) physical players and team and they are able to control many aspects. That is the reason why they are up there, playing good football and we could not do it. It’s my duty, my job to find the way to come back.”

There is no doubt that the City manager will leave no stone unturned to find a solution to his side’s poor run of performances. Last night’s defeat was the fourth consecutive Premier League game where the champions have failed to win. The manner of the defeat will also concern Guardiola. With Rodri suspended the entire City side appeared to lack anyone who could take control of the game. It was the fourth loss of the season without their midfield general’s presence. Their over reliance on the Spanish midfielder has now become an alarming issue.

The treble winners face Luton Town on Sunday as they look to get their season back on track.
