Manchester City youngster Rico Lewis is thrilled with his England debut

Manchester City youngster Rico Lewis was thrilled with his performance during his debut for England. Lewis earned his first cap for England during their 1-all draw with North Macedonia. The Manchester City starlet was named as England’s man-of-the-match for his energetic display.

Speaking following England’s draw with North Macedonia Lewis said he was happy with his performance. He said: “Overall I’m very happy, though obviously not with the result or the decision that went against me. But I’m really happy to have made my debut and it’s a lovely birthday present.” The youngster was harshly adjudged to have fouled Bojan Miovski in the box which led to North Macedonia’s opener.

The performance of the Manchester City youngster may see him play his way into Gareth Soutgate’s for next year’s European Championships. Rico Lewis told the media he isn’t thinking that far ahead yet: “I’m not really focused on any tournaments or anything in the future – all I can do is focus on myself and what I can do to get better and what will be will be. I just need to focus on the things I can improve on, and we’ll see what happens.”

England manager Gareth Southgate was thrilled with the performance of Rico Lewis. Speaking post-game he told the media: “He was excellent. His composure with the ball, the fact that he did respond to that setback, which was really, really harsh. He is a super footballer; he was excellent I thought, and we’re really pleased with him.”

Rico Lewis and the rest of Manchester City’s English contingent will now head back to Manchester following the completion of their national duty. The strong display by Lewis in his England debut may play him into the starting eleven for Manchester City’s clash with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side on Saturday.
