Phil Foden is quietly having an outstanding season. His contribution to Manchester City has been outstanding so far this season. The headlines and stories may go to other players but Foden’s performances this season can’t be overlooked.
This season began with it appearing that City’s boy wonder would play more in midfield. He came on for the injured Kevin De Bruyne in last season’s Champions League final and put in an outstanding performance against Inter Milan. He was man-of-the-match playing in midfield in a 1-nil win for City against Newcastle earlier this season. Foden is capable and in time looks like he will become a fine midfielder.
More recently Phil Foden has featured more on the right wing. With Riyad Mahrez departing in the summer and Bernardo Silva now playing in a more central role City have needed a weapon wide on the right. The City Academy poster boy has more then filled the role. He has become Pep Guardiola’s first choice for the right-wing position.
Playing on the right-wing and drifting centrally has seen Foden become an integral part of the City set-up. This is highlighted by him scoring five goals and added four assists so far this season. Since the beginning of October, he has scored four goals for the treble winners. He only trails Erling Haaland with seven over the same period.
Phil Foden’s goals and general play have been a big ingredient in Pep Guardiola’s side’s current run of five consecutive wins in all competitions. He’s become an even more important piece of the City side that’s beginning to click into gear.
While other players may get the headlines, Phil Foden is quietly becoming the player he was always destined to become for Manchester City this season.
