Pep and Txiki will decide what’s best for Kalvin Phillips says Gareth Southgate

Pep Guardiola and Txiki Begiristain will decide what’s best for Kalvin Phillips England manager Gareth Southgate has told the media. Southgate was speaking with the media following the announcement of the England squad for their upcoming fixtures against Malta and North Macedonia.

When asked about the first team situation with Phillips Southgate answered: “For any player that’s not playing football, it’s about their careers. England is a consequence of your club, but you also want fulfilment. If you’re in training every day then you want to play.”

The England manager further explained the Phillips situation. He added: “Between him, Pep (Guardiola) and Txiki (Begiristain), I’m sure they’ll discuss the best route forward,” Southgate continued. “We know the quality of his play and he was our player of the year a couple of years ago. We’d like him to be in a better rhythm, but there aren’t many players who can play in his position at the level.”

It does appear that Kalvin Phillips days at Manchester City are now numbered. He failed to impress Pep Guardiola when Rodri served his three-match ban in games against Wolves, Newcastle and Arsenal. The England international is seemingly only used when Manchester City have games won like the midweek win against Young Boys.

Juventus are the latest club to be linked with a move for Kalvin Phillips. La Gazzetta Dello Sport reports that Juventus have recently met with the midfielder’s agent to discuss a potential loan move. They further add that the City midfielder has approved a potential move to the Italian giants.

With Euro 24 around the corner and Phillips keen for more first-team football a January move appears to be on the cards for the hard-working midfielder and is likely the best move for all parties.
