Manchester City have reportedly begun talks to extend John Stones contract with the club. The England international has become one of the treble winners most important players of the past 12 months. His importance was highlighted by City’s return to form since he returned from injury against Brighton.
It has been reported by Steve Kay of footballtransfers.com that talks have begun between Stones and the club over a contract extension. Kay adds that when Stones signed an extension in 2021 it included a stipulation that talks over a contract extension would occur during the 23/24 season. Furthermore, Kay reports that the England international is one of Pep Guardiola’s favourites in the City squad and Guardiola wants the defender’s long-term future secured.
John Stones has become a vital part of the Manchester City set-up. His partnership with Ruben Dias has become a key part of the Manchester City defence. The move of Stones to drift into midfield became a masterstroke by Pep Guardiola as City secured the treble. With Stones anchoring the midfield, it has allowed Rodri to get further up the pitch.
The importance of Stones to the City has been highlighted since his return from injury. The champions have looked closer to their best football in consecutive wins over Brighton and Manchester United. It’s no coincidence that this has occurred with Stones back in the starting eleven.
Stones put in a superb display against Manchester United in the Manchester derby. He shone at the back and in midfield when City had possession as they beat their local rivals 3-nil.

It would be welcome news for Manchester City and Pep Guardiola if the club can tie down John Stones to a contract extension.
