Manchester City Opposition Watch: Manchester United

After back-to-back wins against Brighton and Young Boys Pep Guardiola and his squad are now preparing to face Manchester United at Old Trafford. The local derby is next on the agenda, and a big clash awaits. Manchester United is the next side up in Manchester City opposition watch.

Erik Ten Hag’s side currently sits 8th in the Premier League table. They made a slow start to this season but back-to-back 2-1 wins over Sheffield United and Brentford in the Premier League have seen United start to climb the table. They will come into the derby off the back of a 1-nil win over FC Copenhagen in the Champions League. A 72nd-minute Harry Maguire goal and a last-minute penalty save from Andre Onana were enough to see the Red Devils claim their first points in the competition.

As it stands midfielder Casemiro is United’s top scorer this season with 4 goals in all competitions. Rasmus Hojlund and Scott McGominay sit second with 3 goals each. Hojlund hasn’t scored a goal in the Premier League as of yet. His 3 goals have all come in the UEFA Champions League. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford are both tied with 3 assists to lead the way for the Red Devils.

On the injury front, Erik Ten Hag’s squad have been hit by injury. Casemiro may return for the derby after being out with an ankle injury. Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw, Aaron Wann-Bissaka and Lisandro Martinez will all miss the clash with Pep Guardiola’s side.

Despite their slow start to the season Manchester United will be up for the occasion. The club will honour legend Sir Bobby Charlton before the game so a tough test awaits the European champions. Derbies are always 50/50 affairs and Sunday’s promises to be another tight encounter.
