Manchester City have beaten the Swiss champions Young Boys 3-1 in a tough Champions League encounter at the Wankdorf Stadium. The game opened up in the second half and a brace from Erling Haaland and a goal from Manuel Akanji were enough to seal all three points for Pep Guardiola’s side. The result means City top Group G with three wins from three group games. Here are the City player ratings from the hard-fought win.

City player ratings:

Ederson- 6/10: Ederson’s passing was on point, especially his long balls. Could do nothing about Elia’s goal but was perhaps caught too far off his line but the finish was superb.

Rico Lewis- 7/10: Was good with the ball, and his usual busy self in possession. Caught on the ball a couple of times and didn’t step up time in the build-up to Young Boys equaliser.

Ruben Dias- 7/10: A commanding performance as per usual from Dias. His saved header led to City’s opener from Manuel Akanji.

Manuel Akanji- 7.5/10: A quality performance from the Swiss international. Scored City’s opener in a solid performance from Akanji. Will now miss the derby due to a one-game suspension.

Nathan Ake-7/10: A typical performance from Ake. Was rarely beaten at left back and made one crucial intervention late in the first half. Ever reliable as always.

Rodri- 8/10: Yet another brilliant display from Rodri. Was always there when City needed him with or without possession. Also won the penalty that restored City’s lead.

Mateo Kovacic-6.5/10: Looked more like the player he was before his injury. Dictated the game well and his passing was a feature.

Matheus Nunes- 7/10: Tried hard in midfield and was always busy. Played a more advanced midfield role and looked to be adjusting to what is required from him.

Jack Grealish- 8/10: Pep Guardiola defended Grealish pre-game and he showed why. A quality display out wide on both flanks and was arguably City’s most dangerous creative outlet on the night.

Jeremy Doku- 7/10: Started wide on the right wing and toiled away but looked infinitely more dangerous when switched to the left-hand side. On another night may have scored a brace.

Erling Haaland- 9/10: His two goals decided the game after Young Boys equalised. Led the line well and was rewarded with a brace. His second goal was superb on his weaker foot. In ominous form ahead of the weekend’s derby.

Substitutes:

Bernardo Silva- 7.5/10: A superb cameo from Bernardo. Unlucky not to score and helped City push on to put the game away.

Julian Alvarez- 7/10: Had a goal chalked off for handball in the build-up. Energetic as usual and helped City put the game to bed after coming on.

Sergio Gomez- N/A: Not on long enough to mark.

Kalvin Phillips- N/A: Not on long enough to mark.
