Ederson and Julian Alvarez had contrasting nights in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying action overnight. Brazil went down to a 2-nil defeat to Uruguay in Montevideo. Argentina beat Peru 2-nil thanks to some Lionel Messi magic.
For Brazil City shot-stopper Ederson again started in goal continuing as Brazil’s number one keeper. The game itself was a tough and dire affair with Brazil failing to register a shot on target throughout the 90 minutes. Goals from Darwin Nunez and Nicolas De La Cruz were enough to see Uruguay pick up the three points over a lacklustre Brazilian side. In bad news for Brazil Neymar was stretchered off with a serious knee injury before half-time.
From the Manchester City point of view, it was a quiet night in goal for Ederson. He could do nothing about the two goals he conceded and was his usual composed self when in possession.
Manchester City full-back Yan Couto made his first-ever start for Brazil at right-back. The youngster is currently out on loan at Girona. It was a tough test for the youngster who was beaten in the lead-up to Uruguay’s opener in a learning experience for Couto.
Meanwhile in Peru Argentina cruised to a 2-nil win over the hosts. Lionel Messi bagged a brace in his return to the starting lineup following a hamstring injury.
Julian Alvarez started for the World Champions and put in a busy display. His movement and general presence were key for Argentina. He also showed his skill with a beautiful dummy to set up Messi’s second.
Ederson and Julian Alvarez will now head back to Manchester to join up with the City squad. The treble winners host Brighton at the Etihad this Saturday as the Premier League resumes.
