Could Yan Couto be Manchester City’s long-term Kyle Walker replacement?

With Kyle Walker now heading towards the end of his glittering career could Yan Couto be Manchester City’s long-term replacement for the England international? Couto has impressed so far on loan at Girona this season. His performances for the La Liga side have seen him win his first international cap for Brazil.

Manchester City signed Yan Couto in January of 2020. They beat sides such as Arsenal and Barcelona to the Brazilian wonderkids signing. Bruce Archer of the Express reported on the treble winners beating other European clubs to the Brazilian’s prized signature.

Since arriving at the Etihad the Brazilian youngster has spent the vast majority of his time out on loan. He has had three loan spells at Girona beginning with the 20/21 season. He was on loan at the Spanish side last season and again this season. In between those spells, he spent a season on loan in Portugal with SC Braga during the 21/22 season.

Couto has picked up a wealth of experience while learning his craft during his loan spells. He has featured in the Europa League for Braga, and in La Liga and the second tier of Spanish football with Girona. He has quietly gone about establishing himself in European football against quality opposition.

The young full-back is a typical Brazilian full-back. He often plays an attacking wing-back and has thrived in this role. Yan Couto can also slot in on the right wing, or on the right of midfield such is the versatility in his game. He recently earned his first Brazilian cap during their 1-all World Cup qualifier draw with Venezuela.

With Kyle Walker recently signing a contract extension at the treble winners, he isn’t slowing down just yet. But with Yan Couto currently developing in Spain, City may have a long-term replacement already on their books.
