Rico Lewis put in a stunning display to set the tone for Manchester City in their 3-1 win over RB Leipzig. The teenager showed poise and tactical nouse beyond his years in a man-of-the-match performance in a vital win for the European champions.
Lewis played in midfield, in a more advanced role than usual. He shone from the outset finding pockets of space in midfield as City dominated possession, particularly in the first half.

The pockets of space Lewis found were vital in City’s opening goal. A clever ball Bernardo Silva found Lewis, and he put the ball on a plate for Phil Foden to fire City into the lead. It was a goal that was typical of the treble winners. It was also a special moment as two City Academy graduates combined for the goal.
Rico Lewis’s performance in midfield was something City lacked during the weekend defeat to Wolves. His drive and energy from midfield were a welcome addition to the European champion’s set-up. It is also hard to believe that he is 18 years old, such was the quality of his performance.
Pep Guardiola was glowing in his praise of Lewis post-game. Speaking on the youngster’s game Pep said: “What a player, What a player. 18 years old. I have been a manager for 14, 15 years training unbelievable players. To find a player like him playing in the pockets, how he has to move in holding midfield, full-back coming inside moving in the spaces – he is one of the best I ever trained by far.”
Such praise from Guardiola speaks volumes of just how well Rico Lewis played. He should start against Arsenal on the back of Wednesday night’s showing. The sky is the limit for the 18-year-old based on his display.
