Manchester City vs Wolves: City player ratings

Manchester City succumbed to their first defeat of the Premier League season with a 2-1 loss at Molineux to Wolves. It’s the second consecutive loss for Pep Guardiola’s side following on from Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup exit to Newcastle. Here are the City player ratings from a disappointing display from the treble winners.

Player Ratings:

Ederson- 6/10: A quiet day between the sticks but could do nothing about either of Wolves goals.

Kyle Walker- 6.5/10: Tried hard, and defended well but the play was primarily on City’s left-hand side. Had to cover the left at times to help Ake which burnt City on Wolves winner.

Manuel Akanji- 7/10: Defended well when called upon. Offered a threat going forward when he drifted further forward as City pressed for an equalizer.

Ruben Dias- 6.5/10: Was unlucky with the own goal for Wolves opener. Did his job as usual but could do nothing to prevent Wolves second.

Nathan Ake- 4/10: Was run ragged by Pedro Neto and caught out for the opener by the winger. Also, at fault for Wolves second by not stepping up as his defensive line pushed up.

Mateo Kovacic- 6/10: Was trying hard in midfield and looked the most damaging City midfielder. Almost created a few opportunities before being substituted in the second half.

Matheus Nunes- 6/10: Received the harsh reception that was expected from the Wolves fans. Tried hard but was substituted at half-time for Oscar Bobb with City trailing at half-time.

Phil Foden- 5/10: His mistake directly led to Wolves opener. Foden couldn’t get into the game and often drifted centrally which aided the stubborn Wolves rearguard.

Jeremy Doku- 5.5/10: Huffed and puffed out wide but had no luck against Nelson Semedo. Was guilty of trying too hard at times. Doku will learn from this performance after a flying start to his time at City.

Julian Alvarez- 7/10: Scored a cracking free kick to equalize for City. Toiled away but suffered from the play being congested in the middle of the park.

Erling Haaland- 5/10: Suffered from the life of a number 9. Was crowded out as the Wolves back 5 marked him out of the game. Had no chances created for him which will frustrate Haaland and City.

Substitutes:

Oscar Bobb- 6.5/10: Looked lively and created Haaland’s only chance which City’s number 9 scuffed. His talent is obvious and may have been best served playing wide on the right when he came on.

Kalvin Phillips- 6/10: Did nothing wrong and almost equalized late on but his shot went wide. Recycled the ball well but could’ve done more to prevent the Wolves winner.

Jack Grealish- 5/10: Still looks half a yard off as he returns from injury. Jack needs a run of games to get his form and touch back.
