Pep Guardiola has spoken to the media before Manchester City’s third-round Carabao Cup tie with Newcastle United. The City boss previewed the game and gave an update on several injured City stars.
Heading into the tie, Guardiola has stated that he is prioritizing his squad’s health rather than the result. With the European champions having already played 9 games plus his squad featuring for their countries, his star players need a rest when the opportunity presents itself.
The tie against Newcastle does give Kalvin Phillips the chance to impress. With Rodri suspended for three games, there is an opportunity to for Phillips to press his case for minutes.
Pep also updated the status of Mateo Kovacic heading into the game. The Croatian midfielder has returned to training this week following injury.
