Jeremy Doku shines against West Ham and has added something Manchester City didn’t have

Jeremy Doku has shone for Manchester City in their 3-1 win over West Ham at the London Stadium. In only his second start for the club, the young winger showed exactly why the European champions were so keen to bring him to the Etihad.

Starting on the left wing, Doku was up for the game from the start. The young Belgian international took every opportunity to give West Ham right-back Vladimir Coufal a torrid time out wide. He showed the attributes that he brings to the treble winners already-loaded arsenal.

It was an all-action display from City’s new signing. His pace and dribbling ability were already well-known, but this was the first chance for City fans to see him dominate a game in the Premier League. Doku showed that he could create chances for Erling Haaland, and on another day he’d have had a couple of assists to his name. Only some unusually wayward finishing from the City number 9 prevented Doku from a more spectacular showing.

His first goal for Manchester City was a vital one, and put on display what Doku brings that the champions haven’t had in their midst for some time. Doku received the ball from Julian Alvarez and drove at the West Ham defence. He had the Hammers’ defence backpedalling and calmly put away his chance to level the game.

Manchester City haven’t had a winger of this type since Leroy Sane and Raheem Sterling departed the club. In a team built around controlling games, Doku could become a wildcard for Pep Guardiola.

It was a sparkling display from Jeremy Doku, and the early signs are extremely positive for his future at the Etihad.
