Could Pep Guardiola take the England job at the end of his reign at Manchester City? Reports overnight indicate the English FA consider the City boss as a dream candidate for the job. Any move for Pep would be dependent on Gareth Southgate’s status following the 2024 European Championships.
Sam Mokbel of the Daily Mail reports that the FA are interested in exploring the possibility of appointing Pep should Southgate depart next year. In addition, Mokbel adds that Guardiola’s deal expiring at the end of the 24/25 season may present an issue for the FA. He further details that the City boss’s salary may be a stumbling block in any potential move for Guardiola’s services.
The thought of Pep Guardiola taking over England would be a tantalizing one for English fans. Pep is widely regarded as the greatest manager of the modern era of football. This generation of English players is one of the most talented England have produced for some time. Pep at the helm of such a talented group would be a dream scenario for England.
Whether or not Guardiola would be interested in the England job remains to be seen. He has previously floated the idea of extending his stay at the Etihad. Speaking before FA Community Shield loss against Arsenal he hinted he may extend his stay at the champions. He said: “If they are satisfied, I am still satisfied. I want to defend what we won and maybe at the end of the season, if I am tired, we will talk with the club – or maybe extend more.”
As it stands it’s just a dream of the England bosses to secure Guardiola’s services. Pep’s time at City still has two seasons to run before any speculation comes to fruition.
