Kyle Walker has laid down a challenge to the Manchester City squad

Manchester City stand-in captain Kyle Walker has laid down a challenge to this year’s City squad. Tired of chasing down sides in a title race, something Liverpool and Arsenal fans can attest to, Walker wants City to dominate as they did in their Centurion season of 17/18.

Jack Gaughan of the Daily Mail reports that Walker has set a challenge for this season’s City squad. He has told his teammates: “We’re always playing catch-up. Why don’t we try to run away with it, like we did in 2017-18, rather than playing catch-up or waiting for people to drop points?”

The England international is optimistic that this season’s City squad is as good as last season’s treble winners. He told the media post the 5-1 win over Fulham: “Can we get better? It’s hard. Do I think the recruitment and the players they have brought in are just as good? I very much think so. Mateo Kovacic is a born winner, and Josko Gvardiol, he’s class. The sky is the limit.”

After the highs of last season, it has been a summer of change at the Etihad. Four key players left the club with 4 new signings coming in. The hope is that the motivation levels are still high to build upon last season’s success.

With Kyle Walker laying down the challenge to his teammates, it appears the City squad have found extra motivation for this campaign. To go on and dominate the Premier League instead of yet another nail-biting title race is one of the goals. They have started the season perfectly with 4 wins from their opening 4 games.

With Pep Guardiola at the helm, standards at the treble winners won’t be allowed to slip. Judging by Walker’s challenge to the squad the players are along for the ride again.
