UEFA Champions League groups drawn as Manchester City prepare to defend their crown

Manchester City have learnt their opponents for this year’s UEFA Champions League group stage after the draw in Monaco. The defending champions have been drawn in Group G of the competition. City will face RB Leipzig, Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys in the group stage as they prepare to defend the title they won last season.

In a rematch of last season’s second-round matchup up Manchester City will face DFB Pokal winners RB Leipzig. The treble winners overcame the Bundesliga side 8-1 on aggregate, the tie famous for Erling Haaland’s 5 goals in the second leg. It will also see City’s new boy Josko Gvardiol face off against his former club.

The second side in Group G is Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade. City have never faced Red Star in European competition, and this year’s meetings will be the first between the two clubs. The Serbian club won the UEFA Champions League once back in the 1990/91 season.

Swiss champions Young Boys round out Group G. After a successful season last season capturing the Swiss league championship, Young Boys booked their ticket to the group stage with a 3-nil aggregate win over Maccabi Haifa in the UEFA Champions League Qualification play-off.

With City’s UEFA Champions League Group Stage opponents set, Pep Guardiola’s side can set about planning to defend their crown in season 23/24.
