Manchester City target embroiled in betting scandal

Manchester City have stalled negotiations with West Ham for Lucas Paqueta.

The news broke earlier today, with vague information about a “confidential” issue to the dismay of both West Ham and City fans. The reports came out of the blue.

However, it has now emerged that the Brazilian is facing an FA investigation regarding alleged involvement in betting breaches.

Jack Gaughan and Kieran Gill for the Daily Mail confirmed the news:

“It can now be confirmed that the 25-year-old Brazilian is the subject of an FA investigation over allegations of gambling on football.

“The specifics are yet to be revealed while West Ham nervously wait to see if it will lead to Paqueta being charged by the authorities.

“It is understood the probe centres on bets placed in Brazil. Sources close to Paqueta say he denies placing bets.”

The Blues were about to place a £70m bid in desperation to solve the Kevin De Bruyne shaped gap in midfield.

West Ham had been playing hard ball during negotiations. Given that they wanted to keep the player, they will not want to face the potential consequences of these allegations.

Though the Blues might be forced back to the drawing board to find an alternative target. Sources close to the club believe that Paqueta was the only midfield target for this summer.

Therefore, City bosses could now be in a rush to find a suitable option.

Manchester City take on a fresh Newcastle tomorrow in the Premier League. While City will be tired off the back of their Super Cup victory, Newcastle are well rested.
