Manchester City’s new signing Josko Gvardiol made his first start for the European champions in their win against Sevilla in the UEFA Super Cup. He showed plenty of positive signs for what may come from the Croatian international during his first 90 minutes for the club.
After arriving from RB Leipzig, there had been a sense of anticipation for the defender’s first start. He slotted in at the traditional left-back position as Pep Guardiola lined up with a traditional back four. Gvardiol, Ake, Akanji and Kyle Walker started at the back for the treble winners against Sevilla.
The Croatian international showed plenty of poise when in possession as the first half developed. As City dominated possession Gvardiol looked comfortable in the Guardiola set-up. The known qualities of the Croatian in possession were clear for all to see. He linked the play well and showed a good understanding with his teammates in his first full start.
He was unfortunately caught out defensively as Sevilla opened the scoring through Youseff En-Nesryi. The Morrocan international ghosted in to give Sevilla the lead with a towering header in the 25th minute.
As City pressed for an equaliser in the second half Gvardiol pressed further forward. He showed he could be capable of playing the role John Stones made his own at the backend of last season. His passing ability was on full display and the signs were there that he could fill the Stones role in time.
“I couldn’t imagine a better start!” 💬
