Mateo Kovacic wants Josko Gvardiol to join him at Manchester City

New Manchester City signing Mateo Kovacic wants his fellow Croatian Josko Gvardiol to join him at the Etihad.

Kovacic completed the move from Chelsea to Manchester City this transfer window. Now the Croatian midfielder sees Pep Guardiola’s side as the perfect place for Gvardiol to develop his career.

Speaking in Seoul before City’s friendly loss to Atletico Madrid, Kovacic was excited by the prospect of Gvardiol joining the champions. He said, as quoted by the Daily Mail: “Of course, I’d like him to join. I know he’s very young and has great potential. He can come here and learn and be the best version of himself like he wants to be for sure.”

The City midfielder was also cautious about commenting too much on the move. adding: “But it’s not for me to comment if it’s going to happen or not. I’d obviously like it, I’m a good friend with him and he’s Croatian. It would be nice to have a Croatian by my side here.”

Kovacic was also excited about the possibility of Gvardiol developing his potential at the treble winners. He explained: “He’s still very young but very mature for his age. He doesn’t need too much advice. He’s already played a lot of big games and I think he’s ready for the next step. He had a great World Cup and season with RB Leipzig so it would be nice for him to join such a big club and try to improve even more.”

With Mateo Kovacic already appearing to settle in quickly to life at the Etihad under Pep Guardiola, the prospect of his international teammate joining is exciting. It looms as a big week ahead for the champions as they attempt to sign the Croatian defender from RB Leipzig.
