Phil Foden shows flashes of brilliance in midfield against Atletico Madrid

Phil Foden has shown flashes of brilliance in his new midfield role against Atletico Madrid. The champions would go down in a 2-1 defeat against the Spanish club.

The England international put in a superb performance in his new role. At times the Atletico defense couldn’t handle Foden’s creativity and movement. The touch and class that City fans have become accustomed to from the academy graduate stood out against Diego Simeone’s side.

The majority of the treble winner’s best moments came when Foden was pulling the strings in midfield. He was instrumental to everything positive City created in the first half.

Foden put arguably City’s best chance of the first half just wide after some tidy footwork from the England international created the chance at goal. He may have put his chance just wide, but it offered a glimpse of what may come from Foden in the middle of the park this season.

After a sparkling display in the first half, Phil Foden was withdrawn around the 55th minute of the game. But he had shown enough of what he is capable of in midfield to suggest this may be a breakout season for the midfielder.

With his movement and creativity now moving centrally, it could be a welcome addition to City’s midfield brigade this upcoming season.

After such a promising start to his career, while learning his craft, the glimpses shown by Foden in midfield this pre-season certainly whet the appetite for what may lie ahead this season.
