Bayern Munich confirm Joao Cancelo return to Manchester City

Bayern Munich have confirmed Joao Cancelo’s return to Manchester City.

The German champions have declined to take up the offer to buy Cancelo. According to ESPN, Bayern Munich had the option to buy the full back for €70 million as part of the loan deal they agreed when he joined the club in January. Joao Cancelo will now return to Manchester City.

Cancelo made 21 appearances for Bayern Munich, scoring 1 goal and contributing 6 assists in his time at the club. He leaves with a Bundesliga winners medal from his time at Bayern.

He joined Bayern in a surprise loan deal in January. The Sun reported that a falling out with Pep Guardiola over playing time had led to Cancelo leaving Manchester City.

After leaving Manchester City under such circumstances, it’s hard to see Joao Cancelo continuing his career at Manchester City.

Joao Cancelo has made 154 appearances for Manchester City, contributing 9 goals and 22 assists in his time at the Etihad.

Cancelo has picked up 2 Premier League winners medals and a Carabao Cup winners medal during his time at City. He also made the PFA team of the year in seasons 20/21 and 21/22.

Where Cancelo may head next isn’t entirely clear at this time. Arsenal have been linked, by GiveMeSport, with a move for the City full back, but there are no concrete offers for Cancelo at this stage.

Cancelo is one of several Manchester City players whose futures are uncertain. Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, Aymeric Laporte and Kyle Walker could also leave this summer.
